About me
I'm Yumi Maes and I am a visual anthropologist. That means I research and create through film (visual), together with groups of people (anthropology) about topics that are near and dear to my heart.
The work is always collaborative, playful and political.
I'm based in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Education
2020-2021
Master Visual Anthropology
Goldsmiths University of London
Combining theory with practice, I studied ethnographic film, the politics of looking and its power relations.
I graduated with distinction about the infrastructural failure of almost-gentrified neighbourhoods.
2012-2016
Bachelor Cultural Studies
Radboud University Nijmegen
The beauty of cultural studies is its wide range of knowledge production. I chose to mainly study literature, theatre and film with focus on post colonial and visual studies.
I did a minor in Drama at the University in Exeter, had an internship Public Program at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and graduated with a thesis about the lesbian gaze in Orange is the new Black.
